In order to save myself some time answering emails I’ve made this page discussing equipment I don’t service that I am asked about frequently. I’m not able to make exceptions. I’m fairly specialized, and sticking to this allows me to use my time and your money most effectively.

Home Theatre/AVR Units

Due to the complexity of these units and the difficulty of finding parts and documentation, I’m not able to service home theatre/AVR equipment. They have more in common with computer hardware than they do with most of what I work on. Simple issues are much rarer than with other gear, even if it seems simple to you. However there are some simpler 5.1 channel components from the late 80s/early 90s I can help with. I’m not aware of anyone in the Ottawa area who I can recommend for these units. They aren’t made with component level repair in mind. Contacting the manufacturer for an authorized service centre is often the only hope.

Furniture Format Console Units

I’m asked about these frequently, but there is no practical way for me to work on them due to the size. Working on them at your place is impractical, and I don’t have room for you to bring them here. Taking the components out of the cabinet and bringing just them is also impractical. If they are tube they require a lot of work to make them work reliably and safely. I’m not aware of anyone who does work on these in the Ottawa area either. If I ever come across anyone who works on these and does quality work, I’ll refer people to them.

Guitar Setups

I can usually setup my own guitars reasonably well, but there are many great luthiers in the Ottawa area that can do a better job at a better price than I’d be able to offer. I’m happy to recommend them. I have been known to occasionally to do electronic work on guitars though. I once diagnosed and replaced a bad capacitor in an active bass after the music store told the client he’d need a whole new circuit board and that board was not available.

Reel to Reel

I haven’t got into reel to reel yet. Maybe one day I will.

Car Audio

I don’t work on car audio equipment

Non Audio Gear

Sorry I won’t resolder the board from your furnace even if you think it is simple, I can’t test it and therefore can’t guarantee it can be used safely.

Many new consumer level items

Bluetooth speaker, Ipod dock, Bose Acoustimass, minature waterproof radio, many headphones. Stuff that isn’t really made to be repairable and I’m lucky if I can even get it open.

Antique Radios

Antique tabletop tube radios. There’s lots of these from the 30s through the 60s.

Very Early Solid State Equipment

This isn’t as clearly defined a category as other ones here, feel free to ask if you are unsure about a specific piece. I don’t work on anything with germanium (as opposed to silicon) transistors, and many pieces from before 1970.

Germanium semiconductors came before silicon, and were only in use very briefly before silicon, which is far superior, took over. Germanium transistors are much less reliable and cannot be directly replaced with silicon without modifications. So I can’t offer a reliable product at a price anyone is willing to pay when dealing with this gear. And these units were nothing to write home about sonically.
I’ve found even the pre-1970 silicon gear to be more trouble than it is worth too. This gear features weird designs, capacitors leaking visibly most of the time, toxic cadmium dust on the metal (this is as bad as asbestos!!), boards that take a lot of work to access, and more troubles. Total overhauls would be mandatory, and few people want to pay what it would cost to bring this stuff up to spec anyway.
